The Expansion of FMG's Club Hamilton Accommodation village in South Hedland has been given to JBP Construction. Work begins in August to be completed in February next year.

Optimised Design Could Cut Emissions in Half

A University of Cambridge study has found that construction industry carbon emissions could be cut by up to 50% if designs are optimised to use more efficient materials.

The study was published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society A, funded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Science Research Council).

Skills shortage leads to job increase

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that more than 43 500 jobs have been created over the past twelve months in the Australian construction industry due to increased building activity and the emergence of skills shortages in some trades.

Aussie Construction Lifts In Q1 2014

A report from the Sydney Morning Herald shows that the March quarter of 2014 has seen a rise of 0.3% in construction work.

Tom Kennedy from JPMorgan said there are some "encouraging signs that we are seeing a rotation away from resource-sector led investment and building work toward the residential component."

Is the Aussie economy rebalancing itself away from mining investment? It will be very interesting to see the next quarter's results.

• Minimum 1 to 5 yrs in the Construction industry, estimating Mining Non Process Infrastructure, and Commercial Construction.

Random drug and alcohol testing for construction workers on all new government-funded projects.

The Herald Sun is reporting that all new Victorian government-funded projects (such as the East-West link tunnel) will face mandatory onsite drug and alcohol testing - starting in the middle of 2014.

Premier Denis Napthine advised the Herald the changes were about dealing with "dangerous work practice", citing "(widespread) reports of illicit drug use and distribution on Victorian construction sites"
